Community health center board members serve a vital role in improving the health of the community in which they serve. To do their job effectively, board members must first have a clear understanding of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and FQHC “Look-Alikes,” federal requirements and funding, and the role of the board of directors.

Advocacy Do's & Don'ts for Health Centers

Health Centers can and should advocate and lobby, but it’s important to know the laws and restrictions that apply to health centers and board members acting on behalf of their health center. This session outlines the rules that every health center board member should know.

In their role as policymakers, governing board members set a tone for ethical leadership in an organization. This segment addresses the ethical goals of the health center board of directors, including duty of care, duty of loyalty and duty of obedience.
Financial Oversight - Responsibilities of Community Board Members

Mike Holton reviews the board member responsibilities from the financial perspective. In this presentation, Mike details the responsibilities of approving the budget, establishing financial policy and monitoring the financial condition of the community health center (CHC). Training includes understanding of CHC financial reporting and tools needed to fulfill board responsibilities.
Interpreting the Annual Audit

Amy educates board members on the annual financial audit process, including the various terms the auditor will use. She will also detail what the reports, financial statements and schedules included in the audit mean and how to interpret them.
 
Partnerships for Successful Governance: The Board Member/CEO Relationship

Iris addresses the unique nature of the oversight responsibilities associated with the role of the FQHC board and the importance of a healthy partnership with the chief executive officer.
Safeguarding Health Center Assets

Jeffrey Allen takes board members through the concepts of safeguarding assets and what that means in the community health center environment.  Jeff then gives attention to fraud and abuse scenarios, as well as schemes and possible actions the board can take.
